Syllabus information

New repertoire

Perform together, or shine solo. There’s something for everyone in our new syllabus. Discover:

  • A greater selection of repertoire for Horn, Trumpet, Cornet, Trombone, Flugelhorn, Tenor Horn, Trombone, Baritone, Euphonium and Tuba.
  • Music that lends itself to group teaching, in mixed-instrument ensembles at Grades 1 to 5.
  • A diverse range of musical genres and composers with most instrument lists extended to ten pieces, so there is even more choice!
  • Increased flexibility around accompaniment with the inclusion of duets up to Grade 3.

New scales and sight-reading requirements

In response to feedback from teachers and learners, we are bringing you new scales and sight-reading requirements in Brass Practical Grades from 2023.

  • Scales and arpeggios are now shared across most instruments to aid group teaching at Grades 1 to 3
  • Sight-reading has been written as short pieces that reflect the music that players would normally sight-read.
  • At Grades 6 to 8, Horn and Trumpet players no longer need to take a separate transposition test. Instead, we have devised brand new tests incorporate sight-reading and transposition.

Syllabus validity

The new syllabuses can be used in Practical and Performance Grades from 1 January 2023.

Performance Grades:

  • candidates can begin to present the pieces from the new lists
  • candidates can continue to present the pieces from the preceding syllabus lists during the overlap period (see below)

Practical Grades:

  • candidates can continue to present the pieces and scales and sight-reading from the syllabus during the overlap period (see below)
  • the aural-tests remain unchanged

Syllabus overlap

For candidates wishing to present requirements from the preceding syllabus, a one-year overlap period (up to 31 December 2023) applies in all countries.

All exam requirements must be prepared from the same syllabus.
